Dry Needling
Dry needling is an effective treatment for certain individuals experiencing musculoskeletal problems. When performed by a trained and certified professional, it can help manage symptoms related to neuromusculoskeletal movement impairment and pain.
Dry needling uses a sterile, fine-filament needle inserted into soft tissue, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
This creates a small “injury” that stimulates the body’s natural healing process. The body also releases chemicals that help to mediate pain, both locally and via the central nervous system. The goals of dry needling may include decreased pain and/or muscle spasm, decreased swelling, and improved range of motion.
IASTM
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is an effective treatment for tendon, muscle, and ligament injuries. It is a technique used by physical therapists that allows targeted treatment of soft tissues:
The process involves using different angles, pressures, and tools to focus on specific layers of the soft tissue to help address pain and injuries to the soft tissue. IASTM helps with conditions such as: tendonitis pain, ligament and muscle strains, and running injuries such as iliotibial band syndrome.
Extracorporeal Shockwave
ESWT, or Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy, is a noninvasive procedure for soft tissue pain and injury that delivers shock waves to promote healing. It can help with chronic pain from tendinopathy when traditional therapies do not work.
Who Can Benefit From ESWT?
ESWT typically requires three weeks or more of weekly appointments. However, if an athlete does not respond positively within the first two sessions we cease treatment and look for alternative options. If we do see a progression after three weeks, but they are still not at an acceptable level of pain relief, then we continue on an ongoing basis while increasing their physical activity to see how their symptoms react.
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
Blood Flow Restriction is a treatment option that can be implemented on an outpatient basis, and it can effectively and safely promote muscle strengthening. When administered by a certified trained Physical Therapist, patients typically experience a significant increase in their muscle strength, while working with low weight loads, lower repetitions, and shorter work periods.
Benefits of BFR
BFR is an excellent exercise tool to strengthen muscles quickly using smaller weight loads to reduce the risk of injury. It starves the muscles of oxygen, forcing your body into an anaerobic state that is a more targeted way to build muscle mass versus aerobic weight lifting.
E-STIM
E-STIM uses electrical pulses that mimic the natural signals that stem from neurons of the nervous system. These currents are used to target nerves or muscles. By sending signals to muscles, it forces them to contract, which improves blood flow and expedites the repair of injured muscles. It also helps to increase the strength of muscles when used repetitively with cycles of relaxation and contraction. E-STIM can also help to send signals for pain relief using various wavelengths to reach nerves instead of muscles. The electrical stimulation works by blocking pain receptors that are transmitted from nerves to the brain.
What are the Main Types of E-STIM Used in Physical Therapy?
The main types of electrical stimulation (E-Stim / ES) are Interferential Current, Russian, Biphasic, NMES, TENS, and Iontophoresis. NMES and Russian E-stim are primarily indicated for use when muscles are inhibited due to pain or inflammation. This treatment works to re-educate muscles, retrain the neuromuscular system, facilitate strengthening, improve muscle endurance, and expedite muscle recovery.
KINESIO TAPING
Kinesio Taping is a treatment method that uses taping to alleviate pain and encourage lymphatic drainage via the skin. The tape lifts the skin, which helps to decrease inflammation and increase interstitial space in affected areas. Kinesio Taping can be used in hundreds of different ways to help relieve inflammation and pain, promote healing, prevent injury, enhance performance, and increase good circulation to aid in the healing process. The Process involves having a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist identify the cause of pain and then place specialized tape strips in various and targeted directions to support and improve the range of motion in tendons, joints, and muscles. It is thought to work in several ways; one is by altering the proprioception of the sensory nervous system input in muscles, skin, and joints. In a sense, it helps to “reset” the nervous system by improving the way that the skin interacts with what lies beneath it. Kinesio Taping also works by inhibiting pain pathways in joint, skin, and muscle structures to decrease muscle spasms and reduce pain.
The Benefits of Kinesio Taping?
There are many uses for Kinesio Taping. In general, it can:
Kinesio Taping can positively affect the circulatory and lymphatic systems, produce positive effects for the skin, treat fascia, ligaments, tendons, joints, and muscles, and it can be used alongside other modalities and treatment therapies.

Lifestyles at OakBend
Physical therapy might seem as if it is all about muscles, joints, and bones, but there is no way to separate the mind from the body. It is important to consider all aspects of someone’s health - from nutrition to behavioral health - to understand injury, rehabilitation, illness, and pain. At OakBend Physical Therapy, we focus on the total health of our patients and make recommendations to enhance your fitness about things like exercise, nutrition, and overall muscle function - not just for rehabilitation, but long after the healing process is complete. E-STIM can also help to send signals for pain relief using various wavelengths to reach nerves instead of muscles. The electrical stimulation works by blocking pain receptors that are transmitted from nerves to the brain.
